Scissor Lift vs Boom Lift: Choosing a Man Lift
When a scissor lift is enough and when you need an articulating or telescopic boom, with examples from Abu Dhabi fit-out, facade and plant jobs.
"Man lift" covers several very different machines. Choosing the wrong one is the most common reason work at height stalls: a scissor lift that can't reach over the racking, or a boom lift that won't fit through the loading-bay door. Here's how to choose.
Scissor Lifts: Straight Up, Big Platform
A scissor lift raises a wide platform vertically. It carries two or three people with tools and materials, it is very stable, and electric models are quiet and emission-free. The limit is that it only goes straight up. If there is anything between the ground and your work, such as racking, machinery, or a canopy, a scissor lift cannot get over it.
- ✓Electric slab scissors (around 8–14 m): indoor fit-out, ceilings, MEP, and lighting on finished floors
- ✓Narrow-chassis electric scissors: fit through standard doorways and tower service lifts
- ✓Rough-terrain diesel scissors (around 12–18 m): outdoor sites on compacted ground
Articulating Boom Lifts: Up and Over
An articulating boom has a jointed arm, so the basket can reach up, over an obstacle, and down again. This is the machine for pipe racks in ICAD plants, conveyor galleries in quarries, and reaching over a canopy to a facade. The platform is smaller than a scissor lift's, typically for one or two people.
Telescopic Boom Lifts: Maximum Reach
A telescopic boom extends in a straight line and gives the greatest height and outreach, up to around 50 m. Use it for podium facades, tall warehouse exteriors, signage on high buildings, and tall palms and trees. It needs space to set up and swing.

Three Things to Measure Before You Book
- ✓Working height: the highest point you need to work at, plus about 2 m (platform height is about 2 m below working height)
- ✓Access route: door widths, service lift dimensions, ramps, and floor loading
- ✓Ground: finished floor, concrete, compacted ground, or sand
Also check whether the site requires a harness and a certified operator. On booms, a harness attached to the basket anchor is standard practice. Oil, gas, and many industrial sites in Abu Dhabi will also require operator certification before the machine is used.
