Will a Scissor Lift Fit in Your Building's Service Lift?
How to check a scissor lift fits a tower's service lift for upper-floor fit-out: the three measurements to take, typical machine sizes, and floor loading.

Short answer: a narrow electric scissor lift with around 6 to 8 metres of working height is roughly 0.8 metres wide, 1.8 to 2.5 metres long, and 1.2 to 1.5 tons. It fits most goods or service lifts with a door of at least 0.9 metres, a car depth over the machine's length, and a rated load above the machine's weight. Check all three before you book.
The Three Measurements to Take
- ✓Door clear width: the narrowest point of the opening, not the car width
- ✓Car internal depth and height, with the door closed
- ✓Rated load in kilograms, from the plate inside the car
Send a photo of the lift's capacity plate with the measurements. It saves a wasted delivery, because a machine that is 50 kilograms over the lift's rating cannot go up, even if it fits physically.
| Working height | Width | Stowed length | Approx. weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| About 6 m | 0.76 to 0.81 m | 1.8 to 1.9 m | 1.1 to 1.3 t |
| About 8 m | 0.76 to 0.81 m | 2.3 to 2.5 m | 1.3 to 1.6 t |
| About 10 m | 0.81 to 1.2 m | 2.3 to 2.5 m | 1.9 to 2.3 t |
When It Does Not Fit
If the lift is too small, the options are a smaller push-around or vertical mast lift, a podium-style low-level platform for ceiling work under 4 metres, or lifting the machine to the floor by crane through a balcony or loading platform. The crane option needs building approval and a lift plan, so it is usually a last resort.
Floor Loading and Finishes
Upper-floor slabs in residential towers on Al Reem Island or in downtown Abu Dhabi carry scissor lifts without issue in most cases, but ask the building engineer about raised access floors and post-tensioned slabs before drilling or anchoring anything. Use non-marking tyres and protect finished floors along the travel route. Our scissor lift rental page lists the models we supply.
Frequently Asked Questions
How wide is a narrow scissor lift?+
Most narrow electric scissor lifts are about 0.76 to 0.81 metres wide, which passes through a standard single door and most service lift doors.
Can a scissor lift go in a passenger lift?+
Sometimes, but only if the door width, car depth, and rated load all exceed the machine's size and weight, and building management agrees. A goods or service lift is the normal route.
What if the scissor lift is too heavy for the building's lift?+
Use a lighter push-around or vertical mast lift, a low-level podium platform, or have the machine craned onto the floor with building approval.
