Running Heavy Equipment Through Abu Dhabi's Summer

From June to September, Abu Dhabi's heat affects every outdoor job. Temperatures regularly go above 45°C inland, and humidity on the coast makes it feel worse. Heat affects the people, the machines, and the law on when outdoor work can happen. Plan for it from the start rather than losing days mid-project.

The Midday Break

Every summer the UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) enforces a midday break. From 15 June to 15 September, work under direct sun and in open areas stops between 12:30 pm and 3:00 pm. Companies that break the rule face fines per worker. Some work is exempt for technical reasons, such as continuous concrete pours or urgent utility repairs, but you should not assume a lift qualifies.

In practice, crane lifts, outdoor man lift work, and yard forklift work shift to early mornings and late afternoons. Many Abu Dhabi contractors start at dawn in summer and schedule critical lifts for the first hours of the day, when it is cooler and the wind is usually calmer.

Heat Stress for Operators

Abu Dhabi's occupational safety framework (OSHAD) includes guidance on working safely in heat: water, shade, rest breaks, acclimatisation for new workers, and supervisors trained to recognise heat illness. For equipment work, the practical points are:

• ✓Prefer machines with enclosed, air-conditioned cabs for long outdoor shifts
• ✓Rotate operators on man lifts, where the basket is exposed to direct sun and reflected heat
• ✓Keep water in the cab or basket, not just at the welfare cabin
• ✓Watch new or returning operators closely during their first weeks in the heat

Heat and the Machines

Heat is hard on equipment too. Engines and hydraulics run hotter, radiators clogged with dust overheat, and tyres left in the sun lose pressure. Electric forklift batteries drain faster and need careful charging in hot weather. A well-maintained rental machine handles this, but ask your supplier how often they service in summer and how quickly they replace a unit that fails.

Wind in Summer

Summer shamal winds can blow strongly for days at a time, especially on the coast at Khalifa Port and KIZAD and in the open desert of Al Dhafra. Every crane and boom lift has a maximum wind speed in its manufacturer's data, and the lift plan must respect it. Build weather days into any programme with critical summer lifts.

A Summer Planning Checklist
